Getting a Tutor - What to Check and Beware Of?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kenneth_Tang]Kenneth Tang
You have just confirmed to hire a tutor from the tuition agency. On the day of the tuition, the private tutor arrives at your doorstep. After welcoming him/her home, what should you as the parent be doing? Should you allow your child to be tutored? After you have requested for a straight As student to teach your child, should you then proceed to check his/her particulars?
"I trust the tuition agency"
That is one of the most heard excuse when people ask the parents who have had a case of tutor fraud. Should you trust the tuition agency? After all, isn't it always better to confirm? You, as the parent, have set aside some requirements for your tutors. You have decided to hire a female tutor from a top JC who recently scored 4 As in her A level examinations. If you did not check, she would have gotten away with it.
Tutor fraud is more common than you think. Parents all want their best for their children. They want someone from a top school with straight As. However, how many people are that qualified? Out of these qualified students, how many of them would eventually take up tutoring to supplement their allowance? It is not easy to hire a straight A student.
If you took your time out to decide what standards you want your tutor to be, why not take 5 more minutes to look at her certificates and be confident that you are paying for what you requested for?
The things to check include:
Age
Highest Educational Qualification
Grades
School
Do not be surprised that your tutor is claiming to be older than you think! Some agencies ask their tutors to become 2 years older to reflect more maturity!
How are you going to check their highest qualification? By looking at their certificates! You do not expect someone who completed her A levels to only produce her O level certificate do you? If your tutor is an A level graduate, but hasn't gotten her certificate yet, you can ask for her preliminary examination result slip!
How are you going to check their schools? If she claims to be a Raffles Girls School student who went to Hwa Chong Junior College and finally to NUS, she should be able to show you her results slip from the various schools. University students have a matriculation card (also known as a student card) that specifies the school they are studying in. The card has a photo attached too.
Why would the agencies do this to me?
It is very simple. The agency only gets a 50% commission on the 1st month pay of the tutor. There is no long term commitment to you as the parent or to the tutor. Sometimes, the demands from parents are too great. It is difficult to find a top school student with excellent results. Besides, a top school student with 4As and distinction in their S paper does not mean that they can teach well. What is important is the grade in the subject he or she is teaching. Someone with a D in A maths shouldn't be teaching your child in A maths right? Whether he or she gets As in her other subjects is not important. Whether he or she is from a top school isn't important. What is important is that he or she did not lie and that he or she can teach your child well.
To be fair to the agencies, not all agencies commit such fraud. It is also the duty of the parents to check the tutor's qualifications. It is also the duty of the parents to lower their expectations for the standard of the tutors. After all, top grades doesn't show their ability to teach at all.
